The Chronicle of Higher Education, January 28, 2011
The [U.S.] National Science Foundation now requires researchers to submit data-management plans with their grant proposals. Open government advocates hailed the move as the latest in a series of steps that are expanding public access to work done with taxpayer money. The policy will not go so far as to mandate public sharing of all data, which in this context could mean anything from glacier images to scientific papers to computer code. But it will "require people to essentially justify why they choose not to be open," says Beth Noveck, a professor at New York Law School who until recently directed the White House Open Government Initiative.*

This is a non-credit, free course which provides guidelines for good practice in research data management. The course is particularly appropriate for postgraduate students and early career researchers who work with data and would like to learn more about managing their research data. The course content is mainly geared for three disciplines: geosciences, social and political sciences and clinical psychology, however, many of the issues covered apply equally to all research disciplines.

In the 11 February 2011 issue, Science joins with colleagues from Science Signaling, Science Translational Medicine, and Science Careers to provide a broad look at the issues surrounding the increasingly huge influx of research data.
- ShareGeo Open
ShareGeo Open is a spatial data repository that promotes data sharing between creators and users of spatial data. It is a place where researchers, students and lecturers at UK institutions can deposit data for anyone to download and use. This will both increase the use of spatial data and forge links between data creators and data consumers.
